Yup, coloring hair with JUST hair dye and without using bleach or any other lifting agent.

And the answer was (drum roll please) ... yes BUT the results all depend drastically on the technique and products use. All of which we discuss in this article.

What is the Best Burgundy Hair Dye for Dark Hair?

In our own opinion weave (see what we did there 😉) got to give it to:

-Loreal Excellence Hi Color Highlights in color Magenta. We used 5 boxes of hair color for our 22inch wig that was naturally black.

The first thing is to prepare your hair. Make sure your wig or bundles are combed through properly and you have your clips prepared to hold the hair in sections.

Other Items you will need to dye your hair

You will also need a small tooth comb to rake through the hair as well as a brush applicator to apply the color and lastly a bowl to mix the developer and dye.

The box color also calls for Developer to activate the dye. We used Clairol Pure White 40 Volume Developer, but any brand should be fine. All of this will be mixed into a mixing bowl.

Preparing for the Hair Dyeing Process... Its a Messy One!

First, before you do anything make sure you have on old clothes, a few pairs of gloves handy and plastic protecting the areas that you will utilize to apply the dye. We used a huge garbage bag that we cut up and placed on the table and floor.

Believe us when we tell you that it`s a messy job!

Pour the L'oreal HiColor dye into the bowl. We decided to cut the L'oreal HiColor dye tubes from the bottom to allow it to pour out easier. Mix 1 part (1.74 oz) of HiColor hair color to 1.5 parts (2.5 oz) of Creme Developer.

How to dye African American hair without damaging it?

Now let`s be clear here bleach strips the pigment from your hair shaft through the process of oxidation. It is impossible to make your hair a lighter shade without the help of a bleaching (or oxidising) agent. So damage to hair when bleaching can easily happen.

Hydrogen peroxide and ammonia are the most commonly used bleaching agents. They are often mixed together, because when used separately, they are unstable and very slow in lightening the hair. Do not be fooled by manufacturers who use ‘peroxide-free’ labels as a way to promote their products as ‘hair-friendly’. Although these mixtures do not contain peroxide, they will contain another oxidising agent, which can be just as damaging to your strands.

Why Does Bleaching Damage Your Hair?

Bleaching raises your hair’s outer cuticle to allow the bleaching agent to fully penetrate.

Repeated bleaching can permanently raise your cuticle, which allows rapid and continuous loss of moisture from your strands.

Bleached hair is also more porous, and therefore more vulnerable to other chemical and non-chemical hazards. These include everything from heat-styling with blow-dryers and tongs, to the effects of sun, rain and wind.

While all bleaching agents have a damaging effect on your hair’s protein structure, this is intensified each time the process is undertaken. In other words, the more often you bleach or highlight your hair, the more damaged it may become .

What makes this technique so special is that we`re not using bleach to lift the hair which makes it a safer option for your wig, extensions and even your natural hair.
My (the owner) hair is natural underneath my extensions so if I wanted to try this process on my African American naturally textured  4C hair, I definitely would.

Steps to Dying Hair on Your Wig Burgundy

1. Section your hair into sections. At least 4 sections clipped up and out of the way is a good start.
2. If you`re coloring a wig, spray the inside of the lace cap with plenty of Got 2 B Glue Hair Spray (the yellow can). This helps to protect the lace from being dyed also.
3. Beginning from the back start to coat the hair with the mixture. Be sure to saturate the hair with plenty of the mixture. You can use the brush, your gloved hands and a comb to work the mixture through the hair. Start at the top of the hair and run it all the way down the hair. Get as close to the root or track as possible.
4. Allow it to sit for 4-5 hours. Was the hair thoroughly and let air dry. We decided not to shampoo and only condition. We loved our results.
